“I saw him run through the old garage door that used to be in the back of the Fieldhouse. He threw the javelin, and it stuck in the wall all the way at the front end of the Arena, 20 feet up the wall. I’d never seen anything like it.” –Hayden Ferguson, on a Ken Christison javelin throw during an MSU indoor meet
Ken Christison’s career and legacy at Montana State is a product of what can happen when success and talent are crossed with good timing. Christison came to Montana State as a promising quarterback, and parlayed that ability into all-conference honors.
It so happens that his senior season was MSU’s first in the Big Sky Conference, which makes Christison the answer to a good trivia question: name the first-ever All-Big Sky quarterback.
Yet, Christison will always be better known at MSU for being the school’s first-ever track and field All-America. A standout javelin thrower, he was also a Big Sky Conference javelin champion. He still holds the school record in the “old” javelin.
Christison threw 80-yard touchdown passes against both Utab State and Fresno State during his career. He finished 91-for197 passing with 12 touchdowns and 1,410 career passing yards.
