Bobcat Netters Conclude Regular-Season at Home

The Montana State men’s and women’s tennis squads will host matches within the friendly confines of the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center, this weekend. The MSU women’s team will host Weber State on Friday, April 17 at 1 p.m., followed by the Bobcat men against Idaho State at 5 p.m. On Saturday, the Montana State women will face Idaho State at 6 p.m. (should the weather cooperate, this match may be played at 2 p.m. - call 994-2237 for start time). The Bobcat men will conclude weekend play on Sunday when it hosts Montana in the annual ‘Cat-Griz clash at 11 a.m..
That Was The Week That Was:
The Montana State women’s team snapped a five match losing streak to Northern Arizona posting a 5-2 victory over the Lumberjacks, last Friday. The MSU win was the first over NAU since the 2005 season. The win was also Montana State’s fourth consecutive victory, and solidified the Bobcats hold on second place in the Big Sky. MSU opened the match winning the doubles point as the tandem of Laura Villegas and McKenzie Hilmer notched an 8-6 victory at the No. 3 position. NAU evened the match, before MSU’s top three ladder players took over as Stephanie Jasper and Villegas each posted victories. Bobcat freshman Missy Harris clinched the match at No. 2 singles. Senior McKenzie Hilmer concluded MSU’s scoring at No. 5 singles. The Weber State men’s tennis team handed the Bobcats a 5-2 setback Sunday morning. Weber State earned wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles to gain the early advantage and held on for a 5-2 victory. Montana State dropped four-of-six singles matches, but received points at the No. 4 and 5 positions. Sophomore Fletcher Keyes posted his second win of the weekend with a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Chris Williams. Alberto Fuentes, a freshman from Mexico, also posted a win with a 6-4, 6-7, 10-4 victory over Travis Covington. On Saturday, the MSU men posted a 6-1 victory over Northern Arizona. Montana State opened the match winning the doubles point at the top two spots. MSU’s No. 1 tandem of Jakub Dybala and Pawel Turzanski posted a 9-7 win over NAU’s David Floodberg and Jake Tracy. The Bobcats stretched the advantage to 3-0 as Fletcher Keyes and Dybala opened singles action with straight set victories. MSU clinched the match as Turzanski, a sophomore from Lodz, Poland rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Floodberg. The Bobcats closed out the match with wins at Nos. 5 and 6 as Fuentes notched a straight set victory, while Esteban Ferrero held on for a 6-3, 1-6, 10-8 decision.
Big Sky Conference Player of the Week:
Missy Harris is the Big Sky Player of the Week. She played a pivotal role in MSU’s 6-1 win over No. Arizona. Harris teamed with Stephanie Jasper at No. 1 doubles to beat Edit Suhajda and Orsi Golovics 8-4. She then knocked off Kim Van Ginkel 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot. Harris improved to 13-2 overall and 10-2 at No 2 singles.
