“This is such a fun way to start the year,” said Phillips, who celebrates the most successful decade in program history this spring. “It's great to bring our former players together with our current players because they have meant so much to this program, to our tradition. Our alumni playing Saturday are still young guys but are very smart. It's always a great challenge for our current players.”
A trio of seniors lead the Bobcats into 2010. Corey Smith (
Joey Staszcuk took an improbable route to the Bobcat tennis team. A former Billings West standout, he earned his engineering degree from MSU last spring, but his tennis career during that time consisted of playing on his own time. He joins the team this spring as a grad student, and is expected to contribute.
Phillips looks for his team to compete against the all-star alumni lineup. “I want our guys to do well in doubles,” he said. “We'll a play a standard college meet format, so it's familiar to us. We want to beat the alumni, for sure.” MSU's alumni team is anchored by former standouts Scott Potter, Kyle McDonald, Thijs Goossens, Tej Chigetari.
