Northern Arizona junior point-guard Vickie Toney ran through the Montana State defense to post a team-high 19 points to lift the Lumberjacks to a 76-64 victory, Thursday night in Worthington Arena.
“We didn’t contain their point-guard and she was a difference maker,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford.
The opening stanza featured 10 ties, and Northern Arizona (5-15, 3-4) received a jumper from Melissa Spaich with 15-seconds left in the half to take a 31-29 advantage at intermission.
In the second period, the Lumberjacks built the lead to 49-39 at the 13:06 mark, but Montana State (9-11, 2-5) cut the margin in half following a Katie Bussey three-pointer.
NAU answered with a six unanswered points to stake a 64-53 advantage with 4:14 remaining on an Amy Patton steal and layin. Northern Arizona converted 10-of-12 free throw tosses in the final two minutes to secure the win.
Bussey paced the Bobcats in the loss with a game-high 19 points, including three 3-pointers. Also in double-figures was Sarah Strand with 12 points.
Montana State received a boost off the bench from sophomore transfer Janette Jackson, who played 24 minutes and pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds to go along with a career-best six points.
“I wish our entire team had the fight that we got out of Janette,” Binford said. “We have got to get our grit back.”
MSU will host Northern Colorado on Saturday night in Worthington Arena.
