MSU fans can participate in Saturday's food drive
The Governor's Office of Community Service announced today that the Annual Can the Griz/ Can the Cats food drive competition kicks off on Saturday, November 6, 2010.
The Can the Griz/ Can the Cats food drive is a competition between Montana State University and the University of Montana that is lead by Montana Campus Corps (AmeriCorps) members at each University.
“We're very excited to participate in the Cats/Griz food drive this year,” said Stephen Johansson, Campus Corps (AmeriCorps) Team Leader at Montana State University. “The need in our community is continuing to increase as approximately 1 in 9 Gallatin Valley residents are relying on the food bank this year.”
“This is a friendly competition and a reminder to us all that there is still hunger in many communities in Montana,” said Katie Koga, Campus Corps (AmeriCorps) Team Leader at the University of Montana. “The food drive gets the entire community involved in helping families in need get through the winter months.”
Canned food collection begins November 6 and will end November 20 with the winning school announced by Lt. Governor John Bohlinger at the Griz vs. Cats game in Missoula on November 20. The winning school will receive bragging rights.
University of Montana donations will benefit Missoula Food Bank (missoulafoodbank.org). Collections will take place at the gates of Washington-Grizzly Stadium during November 13 and November 20 home games. Canned food boxes will also be located in dorms on campus, at the Office for Civic Engagement and at The Source in the University Center. Additional collection boxes will be located at the Good Food Store, Karl Tyler Chevrolet, Orange Street Food Farm, YMCA, Worden's Market and the Swift Building.
Montana State University donations will benefit Gallatin Valley Food Bank (gallatinvalleyfoodbank.org). Canned food donations will be collected at Bobcat Stadium gates during the November 6 home game. Collection boxes will be located at the MSU Strand Union Building, Culbertson Hall, Montana Hall and any MSU Residence Hall. Collection boxes will also be located at Town and Country Grocery Store, Albertson's on Main Street, Joe's Parkway Supermarket and Rosauer's Supermarket. You can drop your donation off at Gallatin Valley Food Bank and designate your contribution toward the Can the Griz food drive.
“On average, we serve 2400 individuals each month through our emergency food box program,” said Lori Christenson, Program Manager for Gallatin Valley Food Bank. “We really appreciate the Can the Griz / Can the Cats food drive competition. It is a fun and unique way to bring in additional food to both Missoula and Gallatin Valley Food Bank at a time when we're seeing more clients and getting ready for increased holiday giving.”
“This food drive comes at a time when our food bank programs combined serve approximately 5,000 clients each month, so the impact of this project is substantial,” said Nick Roberts, Development Director, Missoula Food Bank. “The timing of this food collection effort is vital as we're transitioning from our slowest donation period of the year into a more active fall and winter holiday season.”
Last year Can the Griz/ Can the Cats food drive competition collected 14,451 pounds of food donations for Gallatin Valley and 4,416 pounds in donations for Missoula.
The Governor's Office of Community Service is a sponsor of this year's food drive in partnership with Bobcat Sports Properties and Grizzly Sports Properties.
“We are excited to promote and highlight Montana Campus Corps (AmeriCorps) members and the terrific work they're doing around the state,” said Jan Lombardi, Executive Director of the Governor's Office of Community Service. “The food drive rivalry is an innovative way that Campus Corps members engage their schools, peers and communities to reach out and help neighbors in need.”
The Governor's Office of Community Service was created in 1993 to promote and expand national service and volunteerism in Montana.
