
Kiesel Reaches Podium at RMISA-NCAA Western Regional Championships

Junior Kaelin Kiesel placed third overall in the women's 5K classic race on Friday.

Montana State junior Nordic standout Kaelin Kiesel reached the podium on the first day of the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Skiing Association-NCAA Western Regional Championships, Friday afternoon in Steamboat Springs, Colo.
Kiesel, who is a two-time NCAA Qualifier, cemented an appearance to her third consecutive national championship by placing third in the women's 5K classic race. Kiesel covered the course in 16:52.4, for her best race of the season. For her efforts, she captured 44 points for the Bobcat ski team.
Also scoring for MSU were Casey Kutz, 14th, 17:52.4, and Rachelle Kanady, 19th, 18:06.9.
Denver's Antje Maempel continued her season dominance in the event with a clocking of 16:37.8.
Other Bobcat finishes included Jamie Devin, 20th, 18:12.8, Corrine Malcolm, 21st, 18:21.8, Mellie Park, 27th, 18:38.3, and Liza Goodwin, 28th, 18:48.9.
Bernhard Roenning paced the Montana State men's contingent, placing 12th overall covering the 10K event in 30:47.5. He was followed by Tyler Reinking, 16th, 31:11.9, Hans Nygren, 19th, 31:35.3, Ryan Scott, 20th, 31:44.2, Luke Bromley, 21st, 31:45.8, and Drew Scott, 30th, 32:29.3.
Colorado's Matt Gelso won the men's individual title with a time of 29:17.8
In alpine action, MSU's men's team had the highest finish of the afternoon as freshman Michael Mackie finished eighth overall with a two-run total of 1:57.89 in the giant slalom. Mackie scored 33 points for the Bobcats.
Also scoring for Montana State were Toby LaMar, 28th, 2:01.89, and Alex van Roon, 32nd, 2:03.61.
van Roon was followed by Chris Barber, 33rd, and Kris Shampeny, 34th.
Hannah Victory paced the Bobcat women's team in the giant slalom finishing 17th with a two-run clocking of 2:00.00. She was followed in MSU's top three by Ali Leighton, 20th, 2:00,19, and Amy Lattimer, 25th, 2:01.42.
Lattimer was followed by teammates Terra Moran, 26th, and Megan Bacharach, 28th.
After four events, host Colorado sits atop the team standings with 435 points. The Buffaloes are followed by Denver 410, Alaska-Achorage 383, New Mexico 362, Utah 356, Nevada 311, and MSU 310.
The championships conclude on Saturday with the Nordic freestyle and alpine slalom races.
