The Montana State alpine team took center stage at the 2010 NCAA Skiing Championships hosted by the University of Colorado, Wednesday afternoon in the giant slalom- the opening event of the four-day finals.

Competing for Montana State were Michael Mackie, Chris Barber and Amy Lattimer.

Mackie, a freshman from Canmore, Alberta, Canada, finished 14th overall with a two-run total of 1:50.98. Following the first run he was 25th overall. Mackie then recorded the sixth fastest second-run time (55:05) to move up 11 spots, missing All America honors by .68-seconds.

“Mike really banged up his knee in training on Tuesday and was doubtful to start the race,” said MSU head coach Dan Brelsford. “We waited until the last minute and made a safe call for him to go ahead and compete. He wasn’t racing at full speed, but he’s learned that in ski racing if you slow down you can go faster by not making mistakes.”

Barber, another part of MSU’s outstanding freshmen class, finished 25th overall. The native of Guelph, Ontario, Canada had a strong first run (55:44) to sit 16th overall. However, a 56:33 second-run dropped him nine spots. Barber finished with a two-run total of 1:51.67.

Lattimer, a senior from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, and MSU’s lone female alpine qualifier, placed 28th in the giant slalom with a two-run total of 2:00.16. She finished 28th overall in both the first and second runs.

“I’m really happy with the way we opened the championships,” Brelsford said. “All three improved upon their pre-race seedings, so I’m pleased with the results.

“Of course, all three were looking for better results and to get into the top 10 for All America honors,” Brelsford said. “Realistically, this was a solid team performance, with a 100-percent finish rate.”

Denver
’s Leif Kristian Haugen won the men’s giant slalom crown in 1:48.84, while
Utah’s Eva Huckova won the women’s title in 1:54.54.

After the first day of competition, RMISA power Denver sits atop the team standings with 239 points. The Pioneers are followed in the top five by Utah 196.5, Vermont 178.5, New Mexico 173, and Dartmouth 148.

Montana
State is currently 10th with 53 points.

Thursday’s NCAA competition will feature the Nordic classical races. The Bobcats will field a full team (three male, three female, student-athletes) in Nordic competition. MSU is one of seven schools from the field of 22 squads to have a full Nordic contingent.
