Montana State head men's tennis coach Mike Phillips doesn't have to twist any arms to get his team to help with their annual Bobcat Tennis Pro-Am. And, it isn't because they are looking for another tennis match. The enthusiasm they have for the fund raiser for the local Cancer Support Center is a result of the passion of a local pro, Ginger Phillips.
Phillips' wife, Ginger, has organized the annual fund raiser for the Cancer Support Center (formerly known as the Wellness Center) for the last three years. Her involvement in volunteering was spurred by the death of her father from cancer several years ago. Since then, she has become an active volunteer in hospice and other local cancer support organizations.
The all-day event took place at the Bobcat Tennis Center on the MSU campus and began with two clinic sessions in the morning with players and the pro. The remainder of the day was spent in pro-am matches where donors played in a doubles match with a team member or professional. The event, that was dubbed “Hitting for Hope,” raised over $10,000 for the local center.
“This is something we really believe in and will continue to support,” Phillips said. “The guys really like doing this—it makes them feel like they are making a difference.”
