Alex Penewell, a 5-11 middle blocker from Newport Beach, Calif., has transferred from the University of Colorado and will compete for the Montana State volleyball squad this fall, announced Bobcat third-year head coach Sara Schaub.
Penewell, who will be a junior, played in 12 matches at CU as a freshman during the 2008 season. In her first career start with the Buffaloes, she notched 14 kills, a .600 hitting percentage and eight block assists in CU's five-game win over Kansas. Penewell ended the year averaging 1.14 blocks per game, which included a season-matching eight block assists against Iowa State and Texas Tech.
“She is a physical middle (blocker) that will be able to come in right away and make a contribution,” Schaub said. “Alex has a solid club background and comes from a winning high school program. Her presence on the team will be felt immediately.”
Penewell prepped at Newport Harbor High School, where she was a two-year letterwinner. As a senior, she helped the Sailors to a 25-4 record and a Sunset League title, while recording 207 kills and 57 blocks.
For her efforts, Penewell she was named to the All-Sunset League First Team, the Daily Pilot Dream Team, and the All-Orange County squad.
Newport Harbor's team was ranked fifth in the nation during her senior season, and Penewell was ranked as a top 100 player.
An excellent student as well, she was a four-time honor roll student at NHHS and was a Big 12 all academic honoree at Colorado.
She is the daughter of Robert and Renee Penewell of Newport Beach, Calif.
