MSU rushes for 415 yards in 54-13 victory
Cody Kirk and Tray Robinson got the numbers, but Montana State's offensive line got much of the credit.
Kirk rambled for 184 yards against Idaho State on Saturday and Robinson added 154, leading the Bobcats to a dominating 54-13 win over the Bengals in Bobcat Stadium on Saturday. MSU's ground game churned out 415 rushing yards, rushed for 17 first downs, and produced both quick strike scores and time consuming drives in coasting to the win.
And in spite of the incredible individual numbers, the post-game talk always reverted to the front line. “They are hard-working guys who care about getting every play right,” MSU head coach Rob Ash said of his team's offensive line. “They're not the biggest or strongest guys around, but they play with really good technique and they play really well together.”
Montana State's offensive day started slowly, with Denarius McGhee throwing an interception on the team's first drive. The Bobcats punted on their next two series, but after gaining field position on each of the three drives the team kicked the power running game into gear on drive four. Taking over at the Bengal 38, Kirk rushed four times and capped the drive with a two-yard touchdown run.
Robinson got into the end zone on MSU's next possession, which spilled into the second quarter, and on the team's next drive Robinson scored on a 34-yard run. In fact, the Bobcats exploded offensively during a stretch of eight consecutive scores, including seven touchdowns, from late in the first quarter to early in the third. Five of the touchdown drives took less than 75 seconds.
While Montana State's offense ran rampant through the middle part of the game, the team's defense held Idaho State's explosive passing game at bay. “I thought the defense was sensational,” Ash said, and the numbers bear that out. Idaho State had gained just 153 total yards at halftime, including just 131 through the air. The Bengals' sensational receiver Rodrick Rumble finished with 13 catches for 145 yards, but had only six catches for 41 yards through three quarters.
Robinson and Kirk combined to each gain over 100 yards rushing for the second time this season, and the team's 415 rushing yards was the fourth-best day in school history, and would have been third if not for the team taking a knee at the game's end.
With the win, Montana State raised its record to 8-1 overall and 6-0 in conference play. Idaho State falls to 2-7 overall, 1-5 in the conference. The Bobcats travel to Weber State next weekend.
