Bobcats continue to improve on the course
Montana State Women's Golf finished 13th overall at the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate on Sunday. The two-day match featured 15 programs, including seven from the Big Sky Conference. San Diego State was the team champion at the Classic Club, a 6,144 yard/par 72 course in Palm Desert, Calif. (Individual Results | Team Results | Combined Results)
The Bobcats carded a three-round total of 973, including a 24-stroke improvement in their final round (314) from the first 18 on Saturday (338). San Diego State finished with 888 (297-305-286).
Christine Wong of San Diego State was the overall medalist after carding 216 (74-73-69). Fresno State's Louisa Lies was the opening day leader with 146, which included a two-under finish in the first round.
Montana State's highest placer was Paige Crawford, who has been the top finisher for MSU all season, leapt 13 spots from 40th to 27th overall. The Colorado Springs, Colo. native carded a 237 (85-78-74) over three rounds of play.
Kelly O'Brien placed 43rd (244), while Molly Dorans and Leslie McGetrick tied at 53rd (248). Melissa Hulstrand placed 67th (255).
Playing individually was Katie Michunovich, who placed 74th with 262.
“This was another tough course,” said head coach Brittany Basye. “We need to work on playing our first rounds like our final rounds where we have better course management. Each time out we're playing with more confidence and we just need to keep moving forward with that throughout each match.”
After the first day of competition, two rounds of 18, MSU sat in 14th. The Bobcats carded a cumulative 659 (338-321). Fresno State finished day one in the top spot with 592 (295-297).
In the opening two rounds, Montana State was led by Crawford and O'Brien who were tied for 40th with 163.
The Bobcats return to the links on Sunday, Oct. 16 at the Idaho State Invitational in Pocatello and Juniper Hills Country Club.
