Moon hit his first four three-pointers to stake Montana State to double-digit leads through much of the first half. The Bobcats successfully attacked SJSU's zone throughout the evening, said MSU head coach Brad Huse.
"I've got to give our guys credit, they attacked (the Spartans' zone) really well in the first half," Huse said. "We shot some threes, but your have to. The difference between tonight and a game like Arizona State is that we made the extra pass tonight. Christian got really hot in that (first half) stretch, but you need that."
The Bobcats held the lead for much of the night, but James Kinney's three-pointer tied the score at 65 late in the second half. MSU answered with six consecutive points on two layups by Xavier Blount and one by Mohammed Fall to push the lead to 71-65. Stewart would ice the game from the free throw line.
"He had confidence, he stepped up, and he nailed them,' Huse said of Stewart's late free throw shooting. The junior finished 10-for-11 from the line, and scored a career-high and team-high 21 points. Moon, a former Henry Ford Community College teammate of Stewart, scored 19 points. Jourdain Allou added 10 points with 10 rebounds.
Kinney led all players with 24 points, while Wil Carter added 15 points and eight rebounds for San Jose State.
Huse credited his team's attitude with securing the win. "The guys are dialed in," MSU's sixth-year head coach said. "They are trying to execute and do what we ask. As long as we do that and play with energy, and I loved the energy tonight, we'll be fine."
Montana State returns to action Saturday night at 7 pm against Cal State Bakersfield in Worthington Arena.
