Brandon North was part of two league title squads the last two years
Brandon North became acclimated to winning championships in his time as a player and coach at Stephen F. Austin. That legacy prepares him well for his new appointment as assistant secondary coach at reigning Big Sky Conference co-champion Montana State, which Bobcat head coach Rob Ash announced Wednesday.
“Sometimes things just work out,” North said with a laugh when asked about moving from one FCS conference champion to another. “I'm really excited about coming to Montana State and joining the staff. I feel it's a program that does things right, and I hope I can bring some expertise and skills to the table and help win more championships.”
According to North, the reputation of Treasure State football helped land him in Bozeman. “I'm very familiar with football in Montana,” he said. “There's tough guys up there, guys that play in snow and don't care what the weather's like. That's my type of football and my type of player.”
North joins the Bobcat coaching staff after four seasons at Stephen F. Austin, where the Lumberjacks captured the 2009 and 2010 Southland Conference football crowns. He coached Lumberjack safeties during that time. Previously North earned all-conference honors at SFA as a defensive back. He played for the school's 1999 league title team, earning ESPN Sports Ticket National Player of the Week honors once that season. The two-time honorable mention all-conference selection finished his career with more than 200 tackles.
“I'm excited about Brandon joining our staff,” Ash said. “He has coached and played successfully at this level, he's a little bit older so he brings some maturity, our players really liked him on his visit here. I think he'll relate well to the players and be a good mentor, which is important to me. Plus, he has the Texas connection, he's from there, so hopefully he'll help us maintain our recruiting pipeline to that state.”
North finished his playing career at SFA in 2000, earning his bachelor's degree in 2003 and his master's degree in 2009. Following graduation he spent four years in retail management before returning to the Lumberjack program as an assistant coach. While at SFA, he coordinated the Lumberjack walk-on program, was NFL liaison, and coached both receivers and defensive backs.
North joins the Bobcat staff immediately in preparation for spring drills, scheduled to begin March 23.
