Offense sets records in 55-10 win
It could only be called an offensive assault. Montana State had three players with over 100 all-purpose yards, and the fourth-ranked Bobcats set team marks with 695 total yards and 40 first downs.
Those numbers helped create a 55-10 win over North Dakota on Saturday.
“That was by far the most complete game we've played,” coach Rob Ash said after he recorded his 46th win at MSU, one behind the legendary Sonny Holland on the all-time list. “I was very, very excited about what I saw out there today. It was great execution by our team in every aspect of the game.”
Cody Kirk rushed for 160 yards and three touchdowns and Orenzo Davis gained 145 yards and two scores. Meanwhile, Shawn Johnson had 110 all-purpose yards, including a 41-yard touchdown pass from DeNarius McGhee.
Kirk and Davis have had nagging leg injuries this season, but both looked strong on an overcast day. It helped that the Bobcats (7-1, 4-1) hadn't played since losing to Eastern Washington back on Oct. 13.
“Two weeks off and we just wanted to play some football. We were excited and had fresh legs,” senior Caleb Schreibeis said. “We pretty much let our bodies heal.”
McGhee threw for 259 yards and had scoring tosses to Jon Ellis and Lee Perkins, in addition to the pass to Johnson. Ellis led both teams with seven catches.
The McGhee to Johnson connection was the first score of the game, and after North Dakota (4-5, 2-4) tied it early, Kirk had two quick touchdowns and Davis added to the total, making it 28-7 at halftime.
The second half was more of the same. Perkins caught his touchdown pass before UND scored on a field goal to make it 35-10 after three quarters. The fourth quarter saw Kirk and Davis sandwich scoring runs around a McGhee-to-Ellis touchdown pass.
Kirk, a junior, now has 25 career rushing touchdowns, good for third on the all-time MSU list.
As good as the Bobcats were with the ball, they were equally strong when UND had the ball, holding the visitors to just 180 total yards, 60 of which came on one play that set up the UND touchdown in the first quarter. Additionally, the Bobcats got to the UND quarterbacks eight times for sacks, two times by senior linebacker Jody Owens.
MSU travels to Sacramento State next week before returning home on Nov. 10 against Portland State.
