MSU routs Vikings, 65-30
Rob Ash now stands alone atop the list of winning football coaches at Montana State.
The Bobcats raced to a 59-10 halftime lead before beating Portland State 65-30 on the frozen turf at Bobcat Stadium on Saturday. The win raised MSU's record to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in the Big Sky Conference.
But the postgame award went to Ash for his 48th win as a Bobcat (against 21 losses), surpassing Sonny Holland as the all-time winningest coach at MSU. As the game finally ended, the Bobcat players carried Ash off the field on their shoulders to the delight of the remaining fans who endured a game that was decided early in 12-degree weather.
Cody Kirk ran for two touchdowns and caught a 54-yard scoring pass from DeNarius McGhee to lead the assault. Kirk finished with 122 yards rushing on 11 carries. Orenzo Davis also got in the end zone, adding another 76 yards on the ground.
McGhee completed 12 of 17 passes for 232 yards. In addition to the scoring strike to Kirk, he also connected with Brian Flotkoetter, Shawn Johnson and Kruiz Siewing for touchdowns.
At halftime, the Bobcats had 389 total yards to 154 for PSU (3-7, 2-5). MSU finished with 470 total yards, to 434 for the Vikings. The luxury of the fast start allowed the Bobcats to dig deep into their bench and give quality minutes to the entire roster.
PSU quarterback Kieran McDonagh started the game with two completions in nine attempts before yielding to backup Collin Ramirez who helped make the second half interesting. The Bobcat secondary made McDonagh's day a rough one. Darius Jones got an interception early, and Steve Bethley returned another interception 32 yards for a score in a second quarter that saw MSU outscore the Vikings 35-3.
In addition to the interceptions, the Vikings also fumbled six times, losing two of them. MSU, on the other hand, did not give up a turnover for the third consecutive game.
The Bobcats next travel to Missoula to face the Grizzlies who were idle on Saturday. Portland State ends its season at Eastern Washington.
