Cold-shooting first half dooms MSU
Stacy Davis scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, leading Pepperdine to a 76-66 win over Montana State in Bozeman on Thursday.
Davis' 9-for-14 effort from the field helped the Waves shoot 50.9% from the floor, including 56% after halftime. “Pepperdine is very persistent on the offensive end,” said MSU coach Brad Huse. “They work the clock, they're very thick, physical. They make you guard them.”
The Bobcats started quick, grabbing an early seven point lead and holding an 18-12 margin halfway through the first half. But Pepperdine closed the half on a 24-8 run, which Huse called the decisive segment of the game. “We went dry for a long stretch in the first half,” Huse said. “You can point to a lot of different factors, but us not converting baskets was key.”
Pepperdine played zone most of the evening, a defense made more effective by the loss of forward Flavien Davis, MSU's key offensive presence inside, to an ankle injury early in the game. “We haven't seen much zone,” Huse said. “We used a four guard lineup and I thought we played with really good energy, but not having Flavien in the second half affected us.”
After trailing by 10 early in the second half, the Bobcats chipped away at the lead and eventually pulled even at 50. The teams played on mostly even terms until the four-minute mark. With the game tied at 59-59 after a pair of Stewart free throws, Pepperdine used an 8-2 spurt to take control of the game. The Bobcats never got within five points again.
Xavier Blount scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds to pace the Bobcats. Jamie Stewart scored 14 points off the bench, while Antonio Biglow dished out seven assists.
Montana State hosts San Jose State Saturday at noon. Fans with tickets to the Montana State-Stony Brook FCS Playoff football game at 5 pm will be admitted free to the basketball game.
