Kyle Weindel, an assistant coach at Ohio University, has been named the ninth head coach in Montana State University volleyball history, announced Bobcat Athletics Director Peter Fields.
A former NCAA All-American at Ball State with coaching experience at both the Division I and club levels, Weindel recently completed his fourth season at Ohio. In his four-year stint with the Ohio Bobcats, Weindel helped guide the squad to three Mid-American Conference titles and three NCAA appearances. In addition, the program notched a 95-39 overall mark and a 50-13 slate in MAC play during that same period.
“We are excited to have Kyle become a member of the Bobcat family,” Fields said. “We had an outstanding pool of candidates for this position, and as the process unfolded, it became apparent to us that Kyle had the background, energy and passion to move our volleyball program forward.”
At Ohio, Weindel was the mastermind behind the Bobcats' blocking and defensive schemes that ranked among the best in the nation, including being listed No. 1 in 2010. Ohio was named the College Volleyball Update's 2010 Blocking Team of the Year. The Bobcats also ranked No. 1 in defense all four seasons in MAC play.
Weindel served as OU's defensive coordinator, with primary training responsibilities with the middle blockers, defensive specialists and right-side attackers. He also served as the program's camp and video coordinator.
During his tenure with the Bobcats, Weindel helped mentor two regular-season MAC most valuable players; three MAC tournament MVPs; two AVCA All-Americans; and 14 All-Mid-American performers.
In 2011, Weindel was honored with the AVCA Thirty Under 30 Award, which is given to thirty of the up-and-coming volleyball coaches under 30 years old in the sport at all levels of the game.
“I'm very excited with the opportunity to become head coach at Montana State University,” Weindel said. “I am anxious to get to campus and begin working. Everyone that I met during the interview process has been very helpful and hospitable. I feel like a part of the Bobcat family already and I have not yet had my first day on campus, and that certainly helps with the transition.
“I'm looking forward to getting out into the community and to establishing relationships with the goal being to get the community excited about volleyball and the future of the of the program,” Weindel added. “Once I make the move to Montana, I really want to start building rapport with the current players and identifying potential student-athletes that I believe can help us in the 2013 class.”
Weindel began his women's collegiate coaching career as an assistant at Saint Louis University in 2007. With the Billikens, he assisted with the daily operations of the program, including training, recruiting and video.
Aside from his collegiate coaching experience, Weindel has a well-documented history of success in club volleyball.
In 2006, Weindel founded and served as executive director of the Indiana Volleyball Academy. From 2003-07, he served as an assistant coach with the Asics Munciana Volleyball Club Samurai 18 Open team. The club produced 14 high school All-Americans as selected by Prepvolleyball.com; five athletes named to Volleyball Magazine's Fab 50 recruit list; five AVCA All-Americans; one Volleyball Magazine All-American; and three Indiana Players of the Year honors.
Weindel has also been involved with USA Volleyball and served as an assistant with the Boys' High Performance Summer Camp in Quincy, Illinois, where he helped with training, coordinating and planning of each practice session. As part of the High Performance National Camp in 2006, he was an assistant camp coach under the direction of current USA Men's National Team Head Coach Hugh McCutcheon.
In 2005, Weindel began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant with the Ball State men's volleyball team and held that position until 2007.
As a student-athlete, he was a four-year letterwinner at Ball State and played an integral role on the Cardinals squad that advanced to the 2002 NCAA Final Four. For his efforts, he garnered All-American recognition. Weindel was named one of the top 50 recruits in the nation as a senior in high school.
A native of St. Louis, Mo., Weindel earned his bachelors of science degree in exercise physiology from Ball State in 2003.
