Multi events highlight first two days of three-day meet
It's another day and another imperative chance to make their mark. Montana State will host their first outdoor meet of the 2012 season at the Montana State Open. The meet will begin with the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon, taking place April 5-6, at newly renovated Bobcat Track and Field Complex. Full track and field events will begin on Saturday, April 7, beginning at 11 a.m. with the field events. (Full Schedule)
Thursday and Friday's schedule allows the first chance for the Bobcat multi athletes to attain their respective scores to gain entry to the Big Sky Championships.
Headed into the meet, Montana State has 14 women qualified in as many events. Heather Haug, Chantel Jaeger, Amanda Murphy, Katie Niemeir and ReBecca Sorenson are qualified in two events apiece.
Murphy enters the home opener ranked first in the Big Sky Conference in the hammer throw and will look to up her third place shot put rank on Saturday, as well. Amber Amsbaugh, also a conference leader, ranks fourth in program history in the high jump and will look to get closer to the top of the record books. Emily Tyrrell, the most recent Big Sky Field Athlete of the Week is ranked first in the javelin almost four meters ahead of second.
On the men's side, MSU has 11 athletes with their tickets punch for the conference championships. Six Bobcats are qualified in multiple events: Trevor Gilreath, Jacob Kirk, Carl Nystuen, David Phillips, Trevor Polson, Jake Turner and Chris Wilson.
The 2012 Big Sky Championships will be held in Bozeman, May 9-12.
“In addition to this being another chance to build up our Championship roster, it helps that it's on our turf,” said head coach Dale Kennedy. “Our kids are obviously more comfortable in their own facilities and that should help boost some confidence headed into the weekend.”
Several colleges from the Treasure State will join the Bobcats in the non-scored home opener: Carroll, Great Falls, Montana, Montana State-Billings and Rocky Mountain.
