Weber State head coach Jared Burnham, who led the Wildcats into the upper echelon of the Big Sky Conference during his eight years in Ogden, has been hired by MSU Director of Athletics Peter Fields to replace Mike Phillips as Bobcat men's tennis coach and Director of the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
“I'm really excited about the community overall,” Burnham said about moving north to Bozeman. “The town has a great tennis environment and a great tennis facility. I'm very excited.”
Fields said he feels similarly about bringing a coach with Burnham's profile to MSU. “We're thrilled to be able to hire a coach with Jared's success and experience,” Fields said. “He knows our conference and region from every possible standpoint in collegiate tennis, from his outstanding success as a player and assistant coach to a strong tenure as head coach at Weber State. He will be a tremendous fit for our program.”
Weber State's head coach since the summer of 2004, Burnham's last four Wildcat teams compiled a 20-11 record in Big Sky play and finished tied for second twice. Burnham has produced nationally-ranked players, been involved in fund-raising and facilities enhancement projects, and produced teams that achieved at a high level academically.
A former team captain and All-Big West player at Utah State, Burnham graduated from the Logan, Utah, school in 2000. While working as a tennis instructor at U.S. Tennis Association National Junior Tennis Camps from 2000-03, he served as assistant women's tennis coach at Boise State. He became that school's assistant men's tennis coach in 2003, a position he held until he became Weber State's head coach a year later.
Burnham was named ITA regional coach of the year in 2002 (Central Region) and 2004 (Mountain Region) at Boise State. He was a three-time team captain and team MVP at Utah State (1997-99), earning all-league honors in 1999.
