Defense stout against run, offense explosive through air
Montana State's defense controlled the ground and the offense the air in the Bobcat football team's 52-play scrimmage Saturday, the team's first live work since last spring.
The Bobcat defense held the offense to 20 yards on 19 carries, but the Bobcat offense countered with an explosive and balanced aerial attack. MSU quarterbacks completed 18 of 31 passes for 209 yards and a touchdown. Those passes were caught by 14 different receivers.
"Both sides of the ball did a lot of good things," said Bobcat coach Rob Ash. "The defense did a really good job against the run, but there was great depth and distribution in the passing game."
John Ellis caught a pass for 47 yards, while Brian Flotkoetter caught a 46-yarder. Quarterbacks DeNarius McGhee and Jake Bleskin each completed seven of 11 passes and "they ran the top two offenses very efficiently," Ash said.
Ash saw positive signs as well as areas where improvement is needed in his first live look at the kicking game. Rory Perez was impressive as punter and nailed three of his four field goal attempts. MSU's other kickers combined for a 3-for-8 showing. Ash lauded redshirt freshman receiver Jake Olson for his work as long snapper.
MSU's next major live session comes Wednesday.
