Montana State first-year head coach Kyle Weindel gave his former mentor Ryan Theis a bittersweet gift on his return to Ohio University, a place he called home for the last four years. Ohio defeated MSU 25-18, 25-18, 25-22 giving Theis his 100th career victory on the Athens campus and the championship crown in its own Bobcat Invitational.
“We didn't capitalize when we had the opportunity,” Weindel said. “Ohio transitioned and terminated what we gave them and you can't do that against a
team of their caliber.”
Freshman Eli Svisco paced the Bobcats with 15 kills, while hitting .464 from the floor and adding nine digs. Sarah Horton was also in double-digits with 11 kills. Senior setter Jennifer Lundquist dished out 33 assists, while defensively; Nicole Baker logged seven digs, with Taylar Barney producing a team-high three blocks.
“I thought we played tough at times,” Weindel said. “We did a nice job battling back in each set, but gave up too many runs.”
Montana State (6-2) will play at Big Sky Conference newcomer North Dakota on Thursday and league preseason favorite Northern Colorado on Saturday.
“It's a short week and we definitely have things we need to shore up by Thursday,” Weindel said. “We're excited to begin Big Sky play.”
For their efforts, Baker and Macy Page were named to the Ohio University Bobcat Invitational All-Tournament team.
