The opening point of the match proved to be the difference as Idaho recorded a 4-3 win over the Montana State women's tennis team, Friday evening in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
Montana State (3-2, 2-0) opened the match winning at No. 3 doubles as the tandem of Wena Tsan and Liana Bates notched a 9-7 win. However, the Vandals fought back winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to take an early 1-0 advantage.
“Doubles couldn't have been any closer,” said MSU head coach Denise Albrecht. “We had a chance at the first point, but we just didn't close out the way we needed. That's something we'll need to work on.”
Idaho went up 2-0 following Victoria Lozano's straight set 6-2, 6-1 win over MSU's Charlotta Hjalmarsson at the top spot. Great Falls native Ellie Crum pulled the Bobcats to within one with a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Belen Barcenilla at No. 4 singles.
The Vandals went up 3-1 with a victory at No. 2 singles, before Constance Alexander fought back from a 5-0 deficit in the second set against MSU's Paulina Lopez at No. 3 singles to post a 6-4, 7-5 win to give Idaho the match.
MSU finished out the contest as Tsan won at No. 5 singles, followed by a straight set win by Bates at No. 6 singles.
“Idaho is a very good team,” Albrecht said. “I thought at times we played some good tennis. We just didn't cash-in when the opportunities presented themselves. I'm excited that the bottom part of our line-up did a super job, including a pair of wins by our Montana kids.”
MSU will host New Mexico at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning.
