Well-rested Cats return to the courts
The wait is nearly over.
Montana State's men's tennis team, which has not played in three weeks and not at home for 42 days, hosts Northern Arizona Saturday and Weber State on Sunday in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center. Each match begins at approximately 1:30 pm, following MSU's women's match against the same opponents.
And for first-year Bobcat coach Jared Burnham, whose team sits in second place in the Big Sky entering weekend play, it's about time. “It kind of feels like a new season,” he said. “It's weird. But hopefully we're ready to play.”
Burnham said the Bobcats face two talented teams this weekend, although good play hasn't necessarily translated into wins each time out. “NAU is very talented,” he said. “They've beaten some good teams and played some close matches. Weber State is very good,” Burnham said of the program he built and left last summer to take the MSU job.
NAU enters weekend play with a 3-15 mark overall, 0-5 in Big Sky play. Weber State stands 5-9 overall, 2-2 in the conference. The Bobcats, standing third in the league, are 9-7 overall, 5-1 in the conference.
Diego Campos has led the Bobcats this season. His 11 singles victories is tied for the second-most in the league, and his 11-4 record is 10th. Niklas Brandes' seven wins is fourth-most against No. 1 singles players in the league, while Markus Schleuter's seven victories is the most at the No. 3 spot.
As well as the Cats played in the first two-and-a-half months of the season, Burnham still has an uneasy feeling entering the weekend because of the long layoff. “I don't know what to expect,” he said. “When you play two or three times a week you always have an idea where each of the guys are, but our guys are well-rested and I think they'll respond.”
