Big first day at NCAA West Regional sets the tone for the weekend
They live to run another day. Grant Grosvenor and Matt Tex rose to the challenge at the opening day of the NCAA West Regional Preliminary. (Thursday Results | Friday Heat Sheets)
Grosvenor may not have logged a personal best time but he blew away the competition when he won his heat in the 800 with a time of 1:49.58, still under the 1:50 mark. Tex crossed the line in his heat with in 1:49.94.
Headed into today's quarterfinal, Elijah Greer of Oregon holds the fastest time with 1:48.22.
Tex and Grosvenor will both compete in the first of three heats on Friday.
“This is huge for our guys,” said head coach Dale Kennedy. “This is Matt's first time out here and to advance on truly shows the progress he's made. Last year Grant placed 43rd overall and didn't make the quarters. I think Friday will be a big day for Bobcat Track and Field.”
Earlier this season, both Bobcat runners bested the program record. Grosvenor ultimately won out with his time of 1:49.28 with Tex now ranking second in MSU history with 1:49.44.
The remainder of the MSU squad also competes on Friday: David Phillips and Sean Ferriter in the hammer throw; Trevor Gilreath in the shot put; Chris Wilson in the 200 and Jacob Kirk and Heather Demorest in the 3,000 steeplechase.
