A pair of solid O-linemen from the '90s fall into the spotlight today
Every day we look at players who donned the jersey number corresponding to the number of days until the Bobcats open the 2013 season on August 29 against Monmouth. The list of MSU football players by the jersey number is based on preseason rosters. The set of available rosters is complete from 1946-81 and '83-present. Only the 1926-27, 1934, 1937 and 1941 rosters are available in the pre-WWII years. Corrections, additions, or rosters that fill out the set are welcome to blamberty@msubobcats.com.
#69
Luke Halliburton, DL: In a funny little twist, Montana State's current #69 is no long the team's current #69. On Tuesday, Scott Gifford – the school's tremendous equipment manager, truly one of the best in the business – switched Halliburton into #98, so 69 for now is vacant. But Halliburton is too good a prospect to ignore or gloss over. An outstanding multi-sport athlete at Kalispell Glacier, Halliburton was a standout wrestler. As Bobcat Beat's Colter Nuanez brilliantly points out, if you want to find a formula for an outstanding prospect find a walk-on who was a champion prep wrestler. That describes Halliburton, and he earned the team's Top Defensive Scout award last fall. When opportunity presents itself, watch for Luke Halliburton to develop into a solid – or better – defensive end in the Blue and Gold.
Spotlight Player: Jersey #69 isn't one that elicits memories of glory in the Bobcat football program, but during the early- and mid-1990s the Bobcats had a nice run in that number. Kerry Pribnow provided quality play as a starting tackle for three seasons, 1992-94, then Rob Brandland moved from defensive line to the offense in a move necessitated by injuries during the '94 campaign and for the two seasons to follow was a very good offensive guard. Brandland flipped his 1994 jersey number – from 96 to 69 – in 1995 and began a solid two-year run. While Brandland was from Mt. Baker, Wash., Pribnow hailed from tiny Lambert, Mont., and epitomizes the long-held notion that small-town Montana kids thrive in the Bobcat program.
Through the Years: Steve Vestman (1982), Jon Gass (1983), Brent Jolly (1984), Bryan Ratzburg (1985), Mike Vasquez (1986), Mike Leibelt (1987), Joe Lane (1988), Ryan Springer (1990), Kerry Pribnow (1991-94), Rob Brandland (1995-96), Keith Weatherby (1997-99), Jason Keyser (2000), Adam Olson (2001), Ben Fjare (2004-05), Justin Hill (2006), Kevin Dean (2007-08), David Abercrombie (2009), Steven Laski (2011), Luke Halliburton (2012)
