It's been a different year for the Montana State Track and Field multis athletes but the end game is still the same. With only three Bobcats representing the Blue and Gold at the 2014 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the stakes are just as high. Beginning Wednesday, May 14 and concluding the following day, the decathlon and heptathlon feature some of the best overall athletes in the league. Northern Arizona will host the outdoor championships in Flagstaff.
In the women's heptathlon, Carley McCutchen and Danielle Muri are entered and will be expected to kick off the women's meet in a favorable position to earn points for Montana State. McCutchen has the second seed with 5,151 points, while Muri is seeded seventh with 4,604. Both are lifetime best scores for the duo.
McCutchen's last outdoor Big Sky Championship was in 2012 where she was the runner-up here in Bozeman, at the Bobcat Track and Field Complex. This is Muri's first outdoor championship.
With two Big Sky individual championships in as many meets, Jeff Mohl returns for his final league championship. After redshirting the indoor season, Mohl is ready for the field of 14 to make every event count. He won the outdoor title in 2012, with a lifetime best 7,630, setting a meet record and missing the program mark by only three points. With a bit of a slow start this year, Mohl has an 11th place seed with 5,513 points.
"The multis have a tendency to set the tone for the Big Sky meet," said head coach Dale Kennedy. "Although this group has been a little smaller this year, it doesn't mean they're any less mighty. They have high expectations of themselves and they'll go out there and give it their best effort in Flagstaff."
The multi-events begin on Wednesday, May 14 at 10 a.m. (MDT) with the decathlon, followed by the heptathlon at 10:30. The two-day competition is slated for a 10 a.m. start once again in Flagstaff, Arizona.
