Montana State’s Northey Competes at USATF Junior Outdoor Championships

Northey, a product of Anchorage, Alaska, had an outstanding freshman season at Montana State.
Montana State track standout Jenette Northey will compete in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the United States Track and Field Association Junior Outdoor Championships, Sunday, July 6, at the University of Oregon's historic Hayward Field in Eugene.
Northey, a product of Anchorage, Alaska, had an outstanding freshman season at Montana State. As a member of the Bobcat cross country squad, she was MSU's No. 2 runner on a team that finished third at the Big Sky meet. In addition, she scored points at the BSC Indoor Championships in the 3000 and 5000-meter races.
During the outdoor campaign, Northey was second at the Big Sky Championships in the steeplechase and was seventh at 5000-meters.
"She was a rock star as a freshman," MSU head coach Dale Kennedy said. "It was just unbelievable what she accomplished in her first season."
Northey is ranked fourth in the steeplechase heading into Sunday's race, which will feature 16 entrants. The top two finishers qualify for the World Junior Championships, but must post a world standard of 10:50 in the event. Northey has already shattered the standard, running a 10:33.10 at both the Big Sky and NCAA First-Round meets.
"She is fourth on paper," Kennedy said. "All that means is that she will be competitive with the rest of the field. Jenette is only two-seconds away from the No. 2 seed. She is more than capable of making the World Junior team."
Northey will become the seventh Bobcat to compete at the USATF Junior Outdoor meet joining Lance Deal, 1980, discus, national champion; Bill Brist, 1982, World Junior XC qualifier; Jonathan Gibson, 2001, steeplechase; Asa Staven, 2009, decathlon, 7th; Jeff Mohl, 2010, decathlon 9th; and Powhattan Williamson, 2012, decathlon.
Northey's race on Sunday is schedule for a 3:35 (PDT) start.
