MSU reaches into small-school ranks to bolster multi-event groups
Montana State dipped into the Treasure State's small-school ranks to add talent and versatility to its track and field squads Tuesday. Manhattan High School's Caleb Neth and Thompson Falls High's Shey Hannum signed National Letters-of-intent to join the Bobcats.
An eight-time individual Class B State Champion, Neth won gold medals this year in both relays, the 400 meters, 300 meter hurdles and long jump. He was second in the 110 hurdles, as well. "Caleb will train as a multi-event athlete," said MSU multi-event coach Tom Eitel, "but he's extremely versatile. He'll help us in several individual events. But he has tremendous potential in the multis."
Hannum won the Class B high jump crown a season ago, finishing second this spring. She also brings considerable event diversity to the Bobcats, having also competed in the javelin, long jump, triple jump, and long hurdles. "Shey is quick and explosive, and she is a good all-around athlete," Eitel said. "She played volleyball and basketball, also. She'll train in the multi-events and be a high jumper, and I expect her to make great strides as her technique in the jumps improves."
Eitel expects Neth and Hannum to help maintain the high level of performance established in the Bobcat multi-events program, which produced a Big Sky Champion (Mason Storm, decathlon) and runner-up (Danielle Rider) in this spring's outdoor conference championships. "Shey and Caleb are both good all-around athletes," he said, "and they're the kind of kids that enjoy success in our program. I'm excited that they'll be Bobcats."
