Kyle Douglass and Caroline Hardin earn the first Big Sky track and field weekly honors for the Bobcats this season
OGDEN, Utah – Montana State hosted the Bobcat preview to open its indoor track and field season on Saturday, Dec. 2, inside of Brick Breeden Fieldhouse. The Bobcats had notable standout individual performances to get the 2017-18 slate off to a strong start.
Two Bobcats stood out from the rest and were honored for their efforts this past weekend. The Big Sky Conference announced on Tuesday, Dec. 5, that senior Kyle Douglass was selected as its Men's Field Athlete of the Week and junior Caroline Hardin was chosen as the league's Women's Track Athlete of the Week.
Douglass (Missoula, Mont.) set a lifetime best in the shot put to slot him as one of the nation's early leaders in the event. Douglass finished with a meet-best throw of 59-05.50, setting a new personal-best indoor mark for the senior thrower. His mark improved his current fifth-place toss on the Bobcats' all-time top 10 chart in the event as he sits less than three feet away from the school-record distance.
He is second among DI athletes in the shot put following the first weekend of meets, with Itamar Levi of Arkansas State standing as the national leader with his throw of 61-03.
Hardin (Bozeman, Mont.) was the top finisher in the 5,000m run and joined the MSU record book in the process on Saturday at the Bobcat Preview. Hardin topped MSU's previous record in the event to become the new record holder for the Bobcats.
Her time of 17:09.52 – converted to 16:34.95 due to track size and altitude – bested the previous mark held by Ariana Lee (16:42.38) which was set in 2004. Her mark narrowly missed out on the Big Sky Conference's all-time top 10 by a little over two seconds as well.
The Bobcats' next meet isn't until the calendar flips to a New Year. MSU will host a multis dual meet over two days, with the start of combined events beginning on Jan. 8 at the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.
