Four of five Bobcats win their individual matches to give squad momentum on final day of Mountain Classic Match Play in Palm Desert, California
PALM DESERT, Calif. -- Montana State women's golf closed out competition in California with a convincing win over Portland State on Wednesday, beating the Vikings, 4-0-1, to finish seventh at the three-day Mountain Classic Match Play tournament in Palm Desert, California.
The Bobcats bounced back from two narrow defeats the previous two days to rally for the satisfying victory over their fellow Big Sky foe at The Classic Club.
"I'm proud of them for battling," head coach Brittany Basye said. "We needed a win, and it was a great team win."
Eva Heinz, a freshman from Goodyear, Arizona, continued her strong stretch of play to open the spring, taking down Portland State's Tannica Porter in quick fashion. For the second consecutive day, Heinz tallied an eagle and added two birdies, dispatching her opponent by going seven-up with six holes to play to give Montana State an early 1-0 advantage.
Scarlet Weidig was the next to pick up a win, coming out on top of Portland State's Mariana Garcia Rosette, going five-up with three holes left. After two quick bogies on the first two holes, Weidig clawed her way back and dominated from then on out, recording three birdies on the afternoon.
Hannah Boraas, a freshman from Alexandria, Minnesota, secured the clinching victory with a par on the 17th hole, going two-up before the 18th.
Jordan Briggs added another individual win for good measure, taking down her counterpart by carding a five on the par-five 18th to surge ahead and make it four out of five individual wins for the Bobcats on the day.
"I love the energy they all have, and the not-giving-up attitudes," Basye said. "We are excited this was a good day--we will focus on the positives and learn from some things that will help us prepare for GCU. It was a great team win, I'm proud of them all!"
Montana State has now seen Portland State on four occasions this year, coming out on top in three of the four meetings.
Northern Arizona, who Montana State led for most of Monday, won the tournament championship on Wednesday, defeating St. Thomas, 3-0-2.
