Montana State will make its first of three-straight trips to the Phoenix metro area this weekend for the University of Wyoming’s Cowgirl Classic.
BOZEMAN, Mont. — Heading into the final month of the season, the Montana State women's golf team will take its first of three trips to Arizona this weekend for the University of Wyoming Cowgirl Classic, held at the par-72, 6,191-yard Ak-Chin Southern Dunes course from April 3-4.
The first two rounds will occur at 7:30 a.m. local time on Monday, April 3, then the final round of the three-round tournament will occur at 7:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday, April 4. A live results link will be provided on the women's golf team's schedule page at msubobcats.com.
With 20 Division I teams in attendance, the Cowgirl Classic will be one of the biggest tournaments of the year for Montana State. Seven of those 20 schools are from the Big Sky Conference — including the top team in Sacramento State.
The Bobcats are coming off finishing ninth out of 11 teams at the University of Hawai'i's Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational earlier this month. Yet with a few weeks off, more practice opportunities and time to rest before the home stretch of the season, Montana State head coach Brittany Basye believes the team is physically and mentally ready for April.
"The Cowgirl Classic has a great field with a lot of Big Sky teams," Basye said. "The focus for us will be strategy. We're going to have to decide which holes could be birdie holes and which holes should be par holes. There are some holes on this course that can sneak up on you, so if we play them smart, we can have an advantage."
MSU's usual five of Kameryn Basye, Lauren Greeny, Scarlet Weidig-Velazquez, Maddie Montoya and Jordan Briggs will compete this weekend. Three of the five players in the Bobcat lineup have prior experience playing at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes course in their collegiate careers.
"This is the home stretch, but we need to focus on finishing well," Basye said. "I'm excited to get back out there. This team wants to win, and I think this team is gritty and competitive enough that they can see how close we are to other teams."
From here, MSU will host the Bobcat Desert Classic at The Golf Club at Estrella, located in Goodyear, Ariz., on April 9-11. That tournament will be the last regular-season event for the Bobcats, which host the Big Sky Conference Championships at the Talking Stick Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. the following week.
